Hal was a great mentor. I came to the PhD program in 1987. My GRE scores were delayed but Hal took a chance anyway. He was relieved when they belatedly proved sufficient for regular admission. I got a true appreciation for his role as grad coordinator when I got a chance to be acting coordinator, after he left, when Srinivas was on sabbatical in early 1993. I will always recall Hal’s sessions on Friday afternoons with the other grad students (MCOM 603). He was very helpful to those of us new to the classroom. It’s a shame he got caught in the last year of the mandatory retirements at age 70. I’m sure would have taught many more years.
